Aakriti Art Gallery, is proud to present the recent works of Padma Vibhushan Sri Satish Gujral—one of India’s most celebrated and respected contemporary artists. It is an honour to host an exhibition by an artist whose span of creative genius covers the whole spectrum of craftsmanship—right from paintings and sculptures, to murals and architecture.
Gujral never fails to surprise, even at 84 and after a career spanning close to six decades. For the genius of Gujral is never at rest, creating continuously, as it responds to his ‘inner voice’. What’s of greater importance is the fact that this Solo Exhibition of Satish Gujral “ Time’s Whirlwind” will be held in Kolkata after a decade—giving the art connoisseurs and aficionados of the city a chance to soak in the magic of Gujral after a very long time. On this occasion a collector’s book & monograph on Satish Gujral would be released.
Aakriti dedicates both its painting as well as its sculpture wing to the master, covering the whole range of drawings, paintings, sculptures as well as his trademark burnt-wood creations. 20 Paintings, 8 Drawings, 4 Burntwood & 21 Bronze Sculptures will be on display. The basic theme of all these works is mechanism and play—a theme very close to Gujral’s heart, since he has a knack for playing and loves taking the risks involved in such a situation. After all, Satish Gujral has always treated his life and work as a huge opportunity to play, taking nothing too earnestly, unlike as with the day’s sport. In Satish’s own words, ” to me my painting, sculpture and architecture are equal manifestations of a single aesthetic.”
Gujral, who has had more than 50 one man shows of paintings and sculptures held in India and abroad including New York (8 times), Mexico City (2 times), London (3 times), Paris, Montréal, Vancouver, Toronto, Hawaii, Rome, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro, Cairo, Berlin, Tokyo, Dubai, Hong Kong, Washington (Once), is immensely happy that he is coming back to the city after a decade with his exhibition. As he puts it, “I have always had admiration for the creative artists of Kolkata. I accredited the Kolkata Progressive artist group for starting the progressive movement in India by introducing modern European art movement as against the myth that it was started by the Progressive artist group of Mumbai.”
Kolkata’s tryst with Satish Gujral’s works promises to be a memorable one.
