Public sector enterprises are generally considered bureaucratic – those who do not encourage, or even allow, entrepreneurship. This is considered the reason for their constant failure. However, are there exceptions? Can entrepreneurship actually happen and work in PSUs?
This meeting will help us see another perspective.

Rana Som is the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NMDC Ltd., a premier government of India enterprise under the ministry of steel. It is conferred with the coveted Nava Ratna Status by the Govt. of India. NMDC is the largest producer of Iron ore in India and has a glorious history spanning over 50 years.

Rana Som started his career in 1972 as a Probationary officer in Calcutta Port Trust. With a brilliant academic career in economics and personal management, he has over the years grown as a full-fledged HR professional. During his association with several industries, he has amassed great strength with resilience to be a practical and visionary leader. In the process, he has displayed exemplary leadership skills in the area of organizational restructuring and survival. His innate passion to excel through performance has got him wide accolades from one and all.

Som has been a functional Director and the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Copper Limited and also the Director (HR) in State Trading Corporation of India Limited. Prior to his joining in NMDC in November, 2007, he is widely known as a chief architect of Hindustan Copper Ltd’s revival. His tenacious efforts coupled with meticulous planning, aggressive marketing strategies and re-engineering skills made revival successful and also paved way for his path towards prosperity.

Ever since his joining NMDC, Som been instrumental in securing the coveted Nava Ratna Status for the company. He has envisaged a number of growth strategies and put them under implementation with appropriate initiatives, both horizontally and vertically. Under his transformational leadership, NMDC is venturing into a host of growth initiative, albeit retaining its core competence in the field of exploration and mining of iron ore, in the field of other minerals and also participate in value addition projects which include the setting up of an integrated steel plant of 3mt capacity in near future.
NMDC has achieved the highest turnover and all the highest profit under the leadership of Som. It is now in a position to finance most of its diversification activities from its internal resources.
